Native American teachings
One aspect of my work incorporates the Medicine Wheel, which is the Native America philosophy of a way of life, almost a personal development of its’ day. I believe we can learn a great deal today from these ancient teachings and have developed workshops and coaching sessions for those who are interested in a deeper more spiritual approach to making changes.
Modern day life, particularly for those living in big cities with pressurised careers, leaves little time for reflection and just being! Time becomes all important, there never seems to be enough of it; meeting deadlines, travelling, beating the traffic, fitting so much into a 24hour period. We sit at computers, watch hours of TV, have a mobile phone to our ear, we breath in pollution from chemicals, cars, trains, planes or the underground. We rush around trying to get everything done!
So often people come to me suffering from stress or exhaustion, some say they can’t stop crying, others that they are snapping at those around them, some that they feel confused or directionless, some irritated and angry. The fact that they have recognise something is wrong and they wish to improve matters is a great breakthrough, and the first step to feeling better.
I feel that we need an antidote to this 21st Century existence and it is one that has worked for me and many others. The ancient teachings of Native Americans offers simple, natural thinking and a way back to appreciation of what we have, who we are and to noticing what is around us. The Medicine Wheel teaches us that our lives are every changing, moving round, like the wheel, we can learn about ourselves by being in the present moment and looking at the world in a different way. To watch a small bird feed its’ young, to enjoy a butterfly flitting around, or dragonflies darting over the river, to notice the way a tiny child approaches a new situation with excitement and joy, we can learn so much from this simplicity.
